Fire Safety Luminiscent Signage Compliance in Spain: Essential Insights

If you've been told your fire safety signage doesn't meet regulations, it's crucial to understand why. In Spain, fire safety signage falls under the jurisdiction of the RIPCI guidelines. These guidelines set out strict criteria for the design, composition, and placement of fire safety signage.

According to the RIPCI guidelines, fire safety signage must adhere to specific standards for pictogram configuration, signage identification, and compliance testing reports. These standards ensure that signage is visible, identifiable, and compliant with safety regulations. Additionally, if your establishment falls within certain designated categories specified in the Basic Self-Protection Plan regulation Annex I, Category A photoluminescent signage is mandated.

Several factors could contribute to non-compliance with fire safety signage regulations:

  1. Incorrect Identification: The signage may lack essential identification elements required by the UNE 23035-4 standard, such as product denomination, classification, manufacturer details, manufacturing date, and lot number.

  2. Lack of Compliance Testing Reports: Fire safety signage must be accompanied by compliance testing reports, demonstrating adherence to the standards outlined in the UNE 23032-4.

  3. Exceeded Lifespan: If the signage has surpassed its designated lifespan, typically around 10 years as per Table III of the RIPCI Annex II, it may no longer meet safety standards.

  4. Inappropriate Category: The signage's category may not align with the location or type of activity within the establishment, as specified by the RIPCI regulations.

  5. Pictogram Inconsistencies: Pictograms used in the signage may not conform to the standards outlined in the UNE 23033-1, UNE 23032, and UNE-EN ISO 7010.

  6. Luminance Requirements: The signage may not meet the luminance thresholds specified in Section 2.4 of the CTE DB SUA 4, which outlines accessibility and safety standards.

As an additional recommendation, the RIPCI guidelines suggest installing signage vertically aligned with the corresponding equipment and positioned between 1.5 and 2.2 meters from ground level. Ensuring compliance with these regulations is essential for maintaining fire safety standards and protecting occupants within your premises.
